The 5 Best Endodontists in Winnipeg

Most people have been to a general dentist for occasional cleaning and tooth extractions. However, if you need special surgery on your teeth, an appointment with an endodontist might be in order.

To help you prepare, we’re lining up our list of the best endodontists in Winnipeg. We’ll also talk about some of the fees you may encounter, and other common questions about this field of dentistry.

How Much Do Endodontists Charge in Winnipeg?

Endodontics is an intricate specialty. This is because it normally involves microsurgery in small parts of the tooth.

If your general dentist refers you to an endodontist, you’ll likely need some tests done. Here are the most common ones, with their average price range.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTESTIMATED  COST
Initial consultation$100 – $200
Bitewing radiographs (dental x-rays)$35 – $50
Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)$120 – $600

Once your doctor gains a clear picture of your situation, he or she may recommend a treatment plan. Apart from the actual procedure, there are other costs to consider such as pain management.

For something like a root canal, a localised numbing agent is enough to make things painless.

If you find that dental procedures give you excess stress or anxiety, you can opt to be sedated.

Other supplemental costs include dental crowns, fillings, and implants. These are done depending on how much reconstruction is needed to help save your tooth.

For all of these procedures, here are the average costs.

PROCEDUREESTIMATED COST
Inhalation sedation$35 – $180
IV sedation$250 – $375
Root canal (front teeth)$300 – $1,500
Root canal (bicuspids)$400 – $1,800
Root canal (molars)$500 – $2,000
Dental crowns$500 – $3,000
Dental fillings$90 – $300
Dental implants `$3,500 – $5,000
Endodontic retreatment20-40% increase from initial treatment

We know that spending thousands of dollars can hit hard financially. That’s why it’s always good to invoke dental insurance if you have it.

If you’re covered for endodontic procedures that go beyond regular check-ups, you can file a claim to help pay the bills. Alternatively, some endodontists offer to notify your insurance company for you.

Prairie Endodontics opened its doors in 2018 and sports a modern facility for endodontic care. The practice is led by Dr. Cunha and Dr. Pesun, who are both highly decorated in their field.

Hailing from Brazil, Dr. Cunha has published over 100 papers in endodontics. He’s been a guest speaker at hundreds of events and has been practicing since 1995.

Meanwhile his co-founder, Dr. Pesun, has had multiple national roles in endodontic leadership. She’s also a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics.

The powerhouse team at Prairie isn’t the only thing to smile about. Their office also runs TDO, which is the universal gold standard for records management in endodontics.

TDO allows for a completely paperless system and is fully integrated with all their diagnostic tools. Prairie operates their own Cone Beam CT and digital radiograph, so everything is within arm’s reach.

Apart from that, we like that the clinic is easy to find.

They’re located across Madison Square, right where Sportsman Marine used to be. The good news is that free parking is aplenty, with several slots beside the clinic.

Some other logistics to keep in mind: cancellations need a 48-hour notice. Luckily, they open earlier than normal office hours, so you can squeeze in an appointment before work.

  • Endodontists are some of the best in their field

I can’t recommend this place enough. They got me in immediately to get my mouth checked and Dr. Cunha got to the bottom of what was causing the pain right away. Dr. Cunha is extremely personable and made me feel super comfortable, and answered all my questions patiently and without judgement. Overall amazing experience, and an amazing doctor.”Elizabeth Berglund

Apart from his many accolades, Dr. Fogel has a 35-year teaching background in Restorative Dentistry. His professional partner, Dr. Rebizant shares this passion as a part-time instructor at the University of Manitoba.

From your first consultation, you can opt to get treated on the same day. We recommend this option if you prefer to pay for treatment right away and sort out insurance claims later.

Alternatively, if the procedure can wait, we recommend their predetermination plan. For this, they’ll submit your treatment details to your insurance provider ahead of time.

Once approved, you can proceed with the treatment and only pay your share of the bill. You do have to wait about 4-6 weeks to get approved, so there’s some timing involved.

Cancellations incur an extra fee unless you notify them 2 business days beforehand. You’ll need to call them though since they’ll only honour a verbal notice.

In terms of accessibility, their central location helps a lot. Just be willing to pay $4 an hour for parking.

Corydon Endodontics is a private practice that offers specialty care for root canals and retreatments. Both of their specificialists have had extensive formal training that enables them to tackle complex cases.

Dr. Chu is a board-certified endodontist and a distinguished member of several national and international organisations. He’s currently the Division Head of Endodontics in the University of Manitoba.

When he’s not teaching at U of M, you’ll likely find him with his patients at Corydon. Patients describe him as charming and accommodating to their needs.

Also a graduate of U of M, Dr. Sobotkiewicz is an NDSE-certified endodontist with formal training in modern diagnosis and treatment. He’s available full-time at Corydon for referrals and patient care.

With the aim to reduce stress during procedures, the facilities at Corydon were built with comfort in mind. We appreciate the clean and modern design, as it helps create a soothing atmosphere.

They also play soft classical music in the background to aid with relaxation. It’s an effective method, based on reviews, and helps minimise the need for extra sedation (and extra costs).

The location is easier to get to from the west side of town, but it’s a quiet neighbourhood with streets that are seldom busy. We were also glad to find automated wheelchair access and parking at the back, though slots may be limited.

Pros

  • Renowned specialists
  • Clean, modern clinic
  • Relaxing atmosphere
  • Push-to-open wheelchair access

Cons

  • No financing options
  • Further enquiry needed for availability
  • Limited parking

Patient Reviews

Here’s some positive feedback left by patients who enjoyed the care they received at Corydon Endodontics:

“I want to commend Corydon Endodontics for the exceptional service I got from them. Dr. Chu was an angel to my life. This was a retreatment of my root canal which was done in a dental office over a year ago. I was in pain for over a year and when Dr. Chu examined my tooth, a canal was missed by my former dentist a year ago. He immediately scheduled the procedure even if he was not supposed to work on that day.”Susan Quintana

“I had my root canal done on January 21, 2020, and have nothing but good things to say about my entire experience. I spent the last 3 years putting off this root canal because I have serious phobias with dentists. I had a great experience, with absolutely no pain during the procedure. I also have no pain now (almost 48hs later). He was so gentle and his receptionists and assistant were both so nice and accommodating. They had classical music playing in the background!”Meaghan Benham

“I was extremely satisfied with my experience with Corydon Endodontics. The reception staff were pleasant and welcoming as was the tidy waiting area. Dr Chu was charming and put me at ease especially since I tend to have anxiety over pain. His assistants were dutiful and polite throughout the procedure. I would recommend Dr. Chu and his staff to anyone in need of his expertise!”Roger Man
